February brought with it MANY reasons to celebrate as we greatly exceeded the national membership target by posting 86.21% on February 4th.  Way to go ladies!  Our next national target is 100% and we are well on our way to making that as well.

Our next Department target is 85% by March 27th.  Yes, as a Department we have already met that challenge but we still have some Units that have some work to do.  I would encourage District membership chairmen to continue to make contact with those Units who have not reached goal and offer your encouragement and support.

The first round of 100% pins and ribbons were mailed to District Membership Chairmen in late January.  Please remember that ONLY the Unit Membership Chairman gets the 100% pin.  I hope to be keeping the post office busy in the weeks to come as more and more of our Units reach their goal.

While the economy continues to pose problems in getting some of our members to renew, be creative in your approach to membership.  Does your Unit pay the dues of members with 50+ continuous years?  Have you thought about setting up a payment plan for those members who might consider becoming a VIM?

Legion birthday month is just around the corner and this provides us with an excellent opportunity to promote our organization.  Encourage Unit membership chairmen to team up with their public relations chairman and create an article recognizing the Legion birthday and the important work of the Auxiliary.  Girls State applications should be out in the schools and once those applications come back to the Unit for selection of delegates and alternates, follow up with the applicants to see if they are junior members or if they are eligible for membership.  For those Units whose Post home has a bar, don’t forget to team up with the commander and bar manager to make sure to check for 2009 membership cards.

Don’t forget to promote the many benefits of membership in the American Legion Auxiliary.  Lots of good membership information can be found on the national web site at www.legion-aux.org.   Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can assist you in any way!
